Keeping afloat

Why, hello fellow followers of my life’s happenings.
Sorry I haven’t updated in a while, I’ve been trying to keep afloat under my ever- changing life. Being busy is a blessing so no whining or self- pity on my side.

To put my life into perspective; I’d say, I’m becoming.

Someone asked me what my blog is about the other day, whether it has a focus point. I said “no, it’s just about my life, very random”. He looked at me strangely and asked if I don’t find that conceited or boring, whether I would consider entertaining my readers. I told him “not really, no”. Then he called me a hippie. I shrugged it off! People and their opinions, ugh.

Anywaaaay, it’s occurred to me that people always need positive reinforcement in whatever they are striving to achieve. You would be amazed at how your life changes if you tell a person how good they are at something. The favour will be returned, trust me.
So a while back Morgan Freeman was on mama Oprah’s Next Chapter… I picked up some interesting teachings from him that I want to share with you. The context is obviously on his success in showbiz and what has gotten him to where he is.
Keep your panties on coz “this is biiiiiggg” *said in mama O’s voice*

1 Follow your own muse
2 Hold onto your principles

3 The tallest tree must also be cut down

4 Confidence rears her beautiful head when glory … (I don’t know what he said after this but it was so great, I pondered and forgot to finish taking notes- use your imagination people)

5 Be irreplaceable

6 Create an everlasting partnership

7 Realise your dream

8 Listen and observe

9 Be at peace with yourself, you are as important as the stars

Later lovers! Wishing you light, peace, love and compassion; go out there and succeed.

Nail the interview

Yesterday I was invited to what I believe was one of the best interviews of my life. I have been to plenty so allow me to share some insight on the minds of interviewers and how to properly prepare and have fun while being interviewed. Some background on the company: It’s a communications company that offers a wealth of services from PR, web development, media training, exhibitions, and journalism to name a few of their services. They have an extraordinary list of clients given their eight years in business. Basically if I get this job, I’ll be one of those extremely happy people who just love going to work. I will be most annoying, but guess what? I’ll inspire you to do something you love, are passionate about, and get paid for it.
So below are my top tips for nailing an interview, these are based on my experiences:

Confidence boost. You have been invited for an interview. Give yourself a pat on the back because it means your cover letter and CV has impressed them so much they actually want to meet you in person.
Appearance. You only have one chance to impress your interviewers, so everything you do must be thought out because you won’t get another opportunity. Dress up for the occasion. Neaten up your whole appearance, i.e.; tie you hair, if you have an afro- comb it out,  don’t wear too many accessories, get rid of anything that might distract your interviewers (that could be anything from a noisy bangle or hair that’s in your face), groom your nails, etc.
Be polite. From the minute you enter their premises, put on a huge smile, and greet everyone you meet. If you are offered anything while you wait, go for water, it’s the safest option because you won’t have any dirty spills or accidents waiting to happen.
Show enthusiasm. Once you are in the interview room, look excited to be there. Be a complete pleasure to interview, do whatever it takes not to bore the crap out of them. Being nervous is completely natural but don’t let it take over your interview. Remember they are looking to see what you are really like in person and if you would fit in their environment.
Keep calm and be authentic. Obviously you won’t ace every question they throw at you. If a question is a bit tricky, calm down, have a sip of water, and think back to your past experiences. For example, if you are asked what you would do if faced with a difficult client, reference a past experience and walk them through what you did to get out of that sticky situation. You are not just there to show face, you are there to be memorable so make sure you give them something they haven’t seen or heard from other candidates. There’s no way you could have an exact experience as the previous or next person.
Your interview is headed south if this happens.
Be bold. Okay, this is very important. In an interview situation you might feel a bit intimidated, it’s normal. The trick is to not let it show. Maintain eye contact, smile, be spontaneous, there’s nothing wrong with being prepared, but part of that is preparing for the unknown. What makes yesterday’s interview so memorable is that as much as they appreciated the fact that I came prepared and had thought out answers, they really didn’t want that. They wanted to get to know the real me, what makes me tick, my childhood memories and other light hearted stuff. It’s good to completely prepare for facts and serious stuff, but also walk in with some personality and light heartedness.

Unleash you inner sales representative. Listen, if at any time in my life I feel I hate writing or media, I have a bright future in sales! It is of utmost importance that you know how to sell yourself and to establish a need for your product (in this case it’s yourself) in their business. Have a clear list of your goals, why you would thrive in their environment, believe in your own hype. There’s one thing I’ve learnt from sales or marketing people: even if their product or service is crappy or just too common, they will give you reasons as to why you still need it in your life. Their passion and confidence is infectious and you need that to nail an interview.

Ask and follow up. The last part of an interview is asking questions and knowing when to expect feedback. Don’t be shy to send a follow up email if you still haven’t heard from them. If you don’t get the job, write back and ask that they keep you in their system should anything come up.

Maintaining good relationships. If you don’t get the job, don’t go on a Twitter or Facebook rant, part of seeking work is maintaining good relationships with potential employers. You might get a call because someone recommended you for a job, so be careful not to burn any bridges.
That’s it from me. Go out and nail those interviews!

Love,
K

How I survived winter

A post completely dedicated to my onesie...
It’s the best thing that’s happened to me this past winter. It has been my body and bed warmer, comforter, and has never once judged me for spending the whole day in it. I’ve washed and packed it away now, till next winter. Speaking of which, Jo’burg is freaken cold, the air is just icy and crisp in the evenings and mornings. Boy, was I glad when spring sprung. Yes darlings, Koko has officially relocated, hence the silence. I spend my days jogging, catching up with my fave series’; and yes people, I am doing some work; freelance stuff here and there so I’m not exactly having the time of my life. One thing I miss about working, is free internet accessL. That’s another reason for my silence, I have to prioritise; i.e. bizcom>popitlikekoko.

Don’t be sad sweethearts, soon we will spend unlimited time together!!

Lots of love

Power photography

I'm officially serving my last week's notice. The deadlines are hectic, I'm bathing in alcohol once they're done. In the midst of that, I went on the Daily Mail UK to find these life giving images which are from National Geographic's 2013 Traveller Photo Contest. Simply amazing.

It's Nicole bitches!!

If I had to be someone for a day, Nicole is definitely up there- say top three. OMG she is funny, sarcastic, can never wear too many accessories, looks uber-cool in sunnies, and she has her own fragrance and fashion line! She is literally EVERYTHING I aspire to.
She's given us a glimpse into her life with her Youtube show, #candidlynicole, I live for Tuesdays when a new episode drops.
*sigh* I'm putting her fragrance Nicole by Nicole Richie up on my wish list. I'm marrying whoever buys it for me. Done.

Can't keep a good woman down

Most famous for her role in doubling True Love magazine's circulation from 70 000 to a whopping 140 000, at the  tender age of 22; Khanyi is the epitome of beauty and brains.
After completing her MBA at Harvard Business School, in 2007; she returned to SA to start up Ndalo Media(joint venture with Media 24). Ndalo Media now publishes two high-end magazines: Destiny Magazine and Destiny Man, as well as lifestyle and social media portal, DestinyConnect.com and South African Airways magazine Sawubona .
Her latest venture is the high-end LUMINANCE store which has received a lot backlash after receiving a R34.1 mil investment from the National Empowerment Fund.
There's no story here, she meets the criteria.

Let's learn from her and not tear down what she has worked so hard for. Well done Khanyi, you continue to show us that 'impossible' is a silly statement.

He just wants to run

So me and one of my bff's have been trying to decipher a message I received the other night...

Sender: I've been thinking about you
K: Share?
Sender: I just want to run
K: Where, away?

That's it... Laaaarkkk this person couldn't have meant running as in jogging coz it was late in the evening. So where is he going?? For how long??Will he be back?? Must I wait?? Should I come with??

BFF thinks its hilarious, and that this person is high on something. We've had copious amounts of alcoholic beverages since then in order to come to a conclusion. We've failed and we're calling for help.

Someone, anyone?
What does this mean??

Beauty with heart

What's popping?!

You guys obviously saw that one coming nhe? I've been holding it off but finally had to say/write it. Anywhoo going home (EC) for about a week, where I will be regrouping as Emily Thorne of Revenge would say. I'm totes excited, haven't seen my family since December, going home is expensive yo', a person really feels like a refugee kule Kapa.

Anyway the purpose of this post is to introduce you guys to The Body Shop's Beauty with Heart campaign. I recently had a meeting with Rosie Abdy Collins who is The Body Shop's international community fair trade buyer. She's based in the UK and her work is awesome because she travels all over to source the yummy ingredients in the Body Shop products. The marula for example is sourced from Namibia, beeswax from Cameroon, shea & cocoa from Ghana and honey from Ethopia. The Body Shop has already converted 90 % percent of their products to include at least include one  Community Fair Trade supplier. This means peoples' lives are enriched, there's job creation and more children affording school uniform and study material- that's the whole purpose of the Beauty with Heart movement.
Thanks for the pictures Shelley!

...Now we're here

I said at the beginning I'm not sure how much of myself I want to put out there. But you're know what? Life is about creating opportunity, who knows what doors may open in the near future?
Here's some of my work from the last coupla months, mostly on the editorial side, also a bit of coordinating and sourcing for fashion pages. Doubt it needs explaining but ask me anything you want...

Started from the bottom

Like many media enthusiasts will tell you, internships are very important. They're about building character, making sacrifices and  hard work amongst other things. My first internship role was at The Herald newspaper in PE in 2009. By the World Cup season, I had moved in CT and pushed for more.

This was in 2010, time flies :-)

CT hits

Morning peeps!

Here's what I'll miss most about CT:

~The mountain...DZHU-UH!! As cliché as it sounds, there is something healing and romantic about the beloved Table Mountain. It may not pay the bills, but its still one of the world's wonders.

~ Bargain shopping. I'm a lover of vintage and in my opinion, CT has the best stalls and shops out there. If you're looking for antiques or vintage clothing and accessories, you just need to stumble across a few places. My best stall is owned by a lady called Lulu on corner Church and Burg street. Lulu sources jackets, boots, skirts, dresses and shirt from all over. She's got amazing style herself, I'll try to get a pic of her before I go. Not far from her is sunglass and watch stall, and next to those guys, you will find these old ladies who sell AH-mazing accessories! *sigh*

~ Thursday nights, aka bad decision day. It happens almost every Thursday, one has had a long ass week and just needs one glass of wine to unwind. You get to that secret pub you and your friends love, talk about stuff, someone decides to get a round of tequila- who the hell are you to say no? Next thing THAT song (mine is Fun ft Janelle Monáe: we are young) plays on the JUKE BOX!! Hayke! Isukile! Everyone is in  state of euphoria and no one ever talks about going home. No guessing how Fridays at the office turn out.

~The people. I will obviously miss my tight circle of friends. They have been my family and they will always be. I'll miss everyone I interact with on the daily; from the car guard that greets me with a wide smile on my way to work, to the laundry lady that insists I buy bigger clothes when I need her help to zip up a dress, to the random faces at gym that have become so familiar that I actually notice when they have been slacking.

~My hairstylist. Oh madoda my sweet Linda!! I've yet to tell her I'll be leaving. We girls tend to develop a friendship with someone who touches our hair, because well, if you don't, you will always be that unpleasant client who is never satisfied. Linda and I have had many disagreements about my hair, but I've always walked out so thankful and pleading with her to move in with me. She has a heart of gold and she is a mean machine when it comes to braiding hair.
...with all my heart

New beginnings

Introduction

I've finally done it!  I've started my own blog.
I do not know how much of my life I wish to reveal, nor which course this blog is going to take.
What I can tell you is that I am a lover of wine, fashion, the outdoors and I have a new love for watching series'. Revenge is the best! What amazing ones are out there? Obvi I'm into rom-coms and other lovey dovey stuff! But I do like some drama here and there.
In a months time I will be unemployed, I'm moving to Joburg, so will be sponging off my sister until I get something permanent. Actually being unemployed is such a terrible word, lol. I'll be freelancing!
I won't lie it took some long, hard thinking, sleepless nights and migraines to get to that decision but I have made it and will hopefully update you guys. I'm currently in CT but hey, I also want a chunk of that gold mchana, kunzima eKapa! Especially in my field. But ke, I don't regret my three to four years here because I've gotten some invaluable experience through internships (for two years, with no income) at some amazing magazines, then finally I got the job I am currently holding. Amazing people, I should add;  haven't even fully drafted my resignation letter. What do you think I should say?
Anyway my friend named the blog for me, she has been bugging me to do it for the longest time. Thanks Vuyo.

So stay tuned to more of what's popping in Koko's life.
xx
